The Making of a Psychic - Part 4

One crucial step in training psychic spies is for the psychic to know themselves so they can recognize what is coming from their own mind or soul versus what they are seeing or experiencing during their mission.

Imagine hearing a conversation in your mind; I'm sure we've all experienced that, especially when we're trying to make difficult decisions. Now imagine separating the two voices - the one that tells you to "Go ahead" and the one that says "This isn't the right decision." This is the dilemma psychics have during their missions. One voice could be their own and the other voice could be what they are hearing outside of themselves.

It could take years for someone with psychic abilities to know themselves well enough to recognize which thoughts are their own and which ones are coming from an external source.

Then once a psychic can recognize their own thoughts, feelings and emotions, they must set them completely aside. It is only then that they can see the scenes they need to, hear the words that are spoken, and report back with objectivity.

Where they run into problems is when they begin to second-guess themselves. This happens with main character Vicki Boyd in the Black Swamp Mysteries Series. In the fifth book in the series, The Pendulum Files, her CIA boss Sam reminds her that she should never question the validity of what she sees. That's his job - or the job of a third party that is not associated with the psychic mission. The psychic scene is one piece of a puzzle, one that boots on the ground would confirm if it is accurate.

For example, psychic spies knew that Saddam Hussein was hiding underground and they were even able to pinpoint the geographic region. Psychic spies used during the Iran Hostage situation in the 1970's knew when the hostages were being kept together - and also knew when they were going to be separated, which prompted the (failed) rescue mission.

Here's an exercise:

Turn around in your chair and look straight ahead for a few seconds. Then turn back to your computer.

What did you see when you turned around? No cheating - can't look behind you again! Write down everything you remember. Be objective; don't start second-guessing. Then turn back around and compare the scene behind you with what you've written.

Pick a room that you are familiar with but one that you're not in at the moment. Write down everything you remember about that room. Then take your writing into that room and compare what you've written.

In both instances, you are seeing the scenes in your mind's eye. When you turned back to the computer, you were recalling what you'd seen "from memory" - same with the room you weren't in at the time you recalled it. Yet for both of those moments, you were there in your mind.

As psychic spies progress through their training, they are sometimes given coordinates (latitudes or longitudes) or specific places (such as a street address in Paris) and asked to describe it. As they become more advanced, someone is on the ground in that exact location, and they are asked to describe what that person is doing. The tasks become more complex as their minds grow sharper and they become more attuned to what they're seeing, even though they are not there physically.

How is that even possible, you might ask?

It goes straight to the scientific principles of time and space. That's covered next week, so stay tuned!

The Making of a Psychic - Part 3

There are currently a number of governments around the world who employ psychic spies in their military or intelligence agencies. One accepted method that leads to training is to begin with a complete psychological profile of the person. When someone is undergoing a psychic mission, the last thing they need is for their own personal agenda, biases or emotions to get in the way. That can alter the results and make the psychic less reliable.

Then they undergo a series of tests to see if they actually have some psychic ability or they're just guessing... or they are charlatans.

One of the first basic tests includes a series of pictures, letters or numbers. One person will go into a room that has never been seen by the psychic. They are instructed to turn over cards, displaying each of the pictures, letters or numbers. They don't do this rapidly but wait a minute or so between each one.

The psychic is in another room and is told to describe the images that come through to them.

A true psychic will begin to pick up on the images or the specific letters or numbers, repeating them back. The higher their score, the higher their potential.

Someone who is just guessing or someone who is a charlatan will be completely clueless about the images.

One of the best psychic spies tested not only described each of the cards but described the young woman turning them over and the room she was seated in - even though he had never seen the woman or the room before.

A fun way to test your own psychic or intuitive ability is to be shown a photograph. It's up to you to determine who the person is or what their characteristics are. One that recently came across my desk was from Anna Sayce. Check out this blog to view the pictures: http://www.psychicbutsane.com/psychic-experiments/psychic-experiment-10-how-does-this-woman-look-to-you

Then go to this blog to see who the woman actually is, her nationality and what happened to her life: http://www.psychicbutsane.com/psychic-experiments/results-of-psychic-experiment-10

Next week I'll discuss more testing of psychic spies and how their training begins to develop. In the future, I'll also discuss pitfalls they have to avoid and how governments double-check the results of their psychic missions with boots on the ground.

The Making of a Psychic - Part 2

Last week, I mentioned that many times psychic premonitions or messages will begin in a dream state. While the body is at rest, the commotion that surrounds us during our waking hours slips away, leaving us more open to receiving psychic messages. Many times they come in the form of dreams.

Over the last few years, I've delved deeply into the psychic phenomena of dreams, speaking to many whose dreams have come true and others who work actively in interpreting them. The result has not only been the role of Vicki Boyd, the psychic spy in the Black Swamp Mysteries series, but the dreams that Detective Ryan O'Clery experiences in The Tempest Murders, which I'm happy to say has spun off a second series.

Some people dream things that have really happened or are about to happen.

My mother dreamed that her favorite nephew walked into a room filled with family members who had previously died. As he entered the room, each of the family got up to greet him. They talked, they hugged, and they welcomed him literally with open arms. My mother was also in the room but everyone ignored her, as if she wasn't even there.

The next morning, she was very disturbed by the dream because she didn't understand why family members she'd loved and they'd loved her, had completely ignored her...

Until she received the call that during that night, her favorite nephew, the one in the dream, had died. He'd been killed in an accident, which was very sudden - he'd been young and in the best of health.

She realized then that the reason the family members had greeted him was because he truly was passing over to the other side. The reason they had ignored her is they could not see her since she was still physically on this side. It wasn't her time to be greeted.

Other people dream in code.

Sometimes, our dreams are not to be taken literally, but they are a form of code. For example, many of us have dreamed that we were in a building of some sort. Buildings represent parts of the soul or parts of our lives. Dreaming of a kitchen, for example, means there is something going on in the domestic or home part of our lives. Dreaming of a hotel means a situation in our lives is temporary.

When you begin trying to remember your dreams and make a conscious effort to decipher them, it sends a signal to the universe and to your own brain that you want to tap into something deeper; something that can't be seen with the naked eye. If you continue to write down your dreams, they will become stronger and you'll remember more of them.

Not all psychics or psychic spies begin with dreaming, but many of them do. The more psychic work they do during waking hours, the more apt they are to have lucid dreaming.

So what do you do when you have a disjointed or seemingly nonsensical dream?

Write down as much as you remember, and then go to a trusted source to see what each component means. One that I particularly like (and use when writing about dream sequences in my books) is Dream Moods (http://dreammoods.com/). Not only does it tell what something represents, but often what it's doing or the context it shows up in means something as well. This site delves more into that.

But how does this affect psychic spy training?

Find out next week when I talk about the basic testing of potential psychics, and how the charlatans can be weeded out of the truly gifted - and how science meets the psychic.

The Making of a Psychic - Part 1

Since I began writing the Black Swamp Mysteries series, I've been asked about my research into the character of Vicki Boyd, a CIA psychic spy. So over the next few weeks (or longer, if there's interest) I will be writing a series of blogs about the real psychic spy program and how science and the esoteric are meeting in this golden age of science and technology. Along the way, I'll give specific information about how psychic spies are trained, some of the declassified missions they were engaged in, and other things I've learned along the way as I've conducted some comprehensive research into psychic phenomena.

If you haven't read the Black Swamp Mysteries series, Vicki Boyd makes her entry in Vicki's Key. She came to the attention of the CIA when she was just twelve years old. She had a premonition that her parents would die in an airplane accident, but everyone from her parents to teachers to counselors were convinced that she was exhibiting an active imagination -- until her parents really were killed in the accident on a plane that Vicki had begged them not to take.

So are we born with psychic tendencies?

I have become convinced through my research that what we are able to see - the physical body - is a tiny fraction of who we really are. But each person makes a conscious decision whether to live a physical life or tap into something greater.

Most people focus on the physical. It can be challenging sometimes to concentrate on the work in front of you, your relationships, school or church or volunteer work, plus all the errands one must do to exist in this world - grocery shopping, keeping a roof over your head, etc.

But when we fall asleep, only our physical body requires the rest. It is then that people often dream.

And it is in dreams that psychic phenomena often begins to manifest itself.

Step number one is often to become more conscious of what you dream. When you awaken, try remembering as much as you can about your dreams. It doesn't matter at this point whether the dreams make sense, or if they are disjointed or seem nonsensical. Simply begin by becoming aware of them.

You may even want to begin a dream diary. Keep a notebook on your nightstand and jot down as much as you can recall about your dreams.

Next Tuesday, I'll talk about another step psychics often employ that build upon dreams.

WIP Wednesday - The Pendulum Files

With The Tempest Murders out of my hands and heading into the book stores, I have turned my attention to the final editing of the next book in the Black Swamp Mysteries series, The Pendulum Files.

Ironically, I discovered my last two books both have nautical-themed covers: in the case of The Tempest Murders, it depicts a scene out of the book when Ryan O'Clery has stolen a boat to reach the Outer Banks of North Carolina before a serial killer reaches his lover, Cathleen Reilly.

In The Pendulum Files, the cover depicts something quite different: an international plot to stop goods from reaching the United States. Ships are being bombed in the open seas and no one seems able to stop the attacks. Vicki Boyd and Dylan Maguire team up again in another CIA assignment: to find who is responsible for the bombings - and stop them.

Vicki is expecting a child with Dylan Maguire, and the old, rambling house they live in has come alive once more. But this time, each time apparitions make their appearance, Vicki hears the constant, rhythmic ticking of a pendulum...

This book is the fifth in the Black Swamp Mysteries series, and is scheduled to be released in the spring of 2014.

Freaky Friday

I've been asked how my fascination with the freaky or bizarre could possibly help me with my writing. To answer that, one need not look further than my series, Black Swamp Mysteries, and psychic spy Vicki Boyd.

I've mentioned in my Friday posts that we are in a new age with regard to science and technology. In today's world, scientists are able to use some of the same technology developed to identify tumors in the brain to actually track brain movement during psychic sessions.

During a psychic session, activity in the brain's frontal lobe increases dramatically.

An unexpected result of psychic sessions is other parts of the brain used to identify our surroundings and our physical self actually diminish. This means the person in the session itself is no longer aware of their own physical surroundings or what is happening around them while they increasingly "see" what is happening somewhere else in the world.

When psychic spies are used in the United States Government (declassfied information has revealed our government does use them in the CIA, Department of Defense and other Intelligence agencies) they do not treat their missions as hocus pocus but they approach them from scientific stances. Every piece of information provided is analyzed and verified before they are acted upon.

In the Black Swamp Mysteries series, one of the main characters, Vicki Boyd, is a psychic spy. She travels to a remote village in Afghanistan in Vicki's Key to uncover a black market operation; she finds a woman with secrets that could topple our government in Secrets of a Dangerous Woman. And in Dylan's Song, due to be released in March 2013, she locates a CIA operative who disappeared in Ireland while following a known terrorist.

Tuesday Teaser

The most popular character of all my books turns out to be an Irishman and Dylan Maguire has completely transformed the Black Swamp Mysteries series. He originally made his debut in Vicki's Key, released in the spring of 2012. Below is an excerpt from the book as Dylan and CIA psychic spy Vicki Boyd are getting to know each other.

“What was your life like in Ireland?” Vicki asked. “What did you do there?”

Dylan's eyes turned dark and he averted his gaze. “What did I do there?” he repeated as if he was deeply contemplating the question. “I lived. Just like everybody else. I felt happiness and sorrow. Failure and success.”

“And you’re here now.”

“That I am.”

She watched him take a hefty bite out of the chicken. “It was a woman, wasn’t it?” she asked softly.

He half-turned and watched a couple strolling around the lake hand-in-hand. “Must it always be a woman?”

“What else could make you leave a home you’d known all your life?”

“I don’t know,” he said, turning back to look at her again. “Why don’t you tell me?” His voice was soft and almost silky. “What prompted you to come here, to a town where you didn’t know a soul, to work for an old woman you’d met only through the Internet?”

“Touché.”

“No, I’m quite serious. What made you come here?”

“I wanted to start over. And I didn’t know what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.”

“But you must have some skills.”

“Are you saying I’m a poor fish breeder?”

He laughed. It came from deep inside him; she could picture him in an Irish pub, surrounded by friends, raising a pint high and laughing that same laugh. “Not at all. You make a very good fish breeder.” Then he narrowed his eyes. “You’re an educated woman.”

“Home schooled.”

“Are you, now?”

“And you’re not.”

“No. Typical school. They’re a bit like a prison, they are.”

“You’d prefer to be outdoors.”

“I’m an open book to you, aren’t I? Aye, the outdoors beckon to me. Give me sunshine, fresh air and laughter. And a bit of ale never hurt.”

“So you know why I came here. To start over,” Vicki said. “Why did you come here?”

He paused for such a long time that she was coming to the conclusion that he did not intend to answer when he said, “To start over.”

“And you chose Lumberton because Aunt Laurel is here.”

He nodded. “Same as you, actually. She summoned us both, didn’t she?”

In the fourth book of the Black Swamp Mysteries series, Dylan's Song, Dylan is summoned back to Ireland when his grandmother is dying. It is there that Vicki unravels the mystery behind the real reason Dylan left his homeland and came to America--while harboring a secret of her own.

WIP Wednesday and The Next Big Thing

Special thanks to Sandra Balzo for including me in The Next Big Thing blog hop! The rules for her accepting me in this great event are to answer the interview questions below and pass the torch on to other deserving authors. So here goes:

What is the working title of your Work in Progress?

Dylan's Song. It's the fourth book in the Black Swamp Mysteries series.

Where did the idea come from for the book?

There are two plots in the book which come together at the end. One plot involves finding and extracting a missing CIA operative. I got the idea from combing through declassified information about real operatives who were rescued. The second plot is more personal and involves Dylan's past, which he thought he left behind in Ireland. I love that country and knew I had to write at least one book that takes place there. So this was the perfect opportunity to intertwine two stories into one adventure.

What genre does your book fall under?

It is a suspense/thriller with a touch of the paranormal, thanks to psychic spy Vicki Boyd and her propensity for seeing ghosts.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie?

Do you think Eduardo Verastegui (shown at right) could do an Irish accent?

I can definitely see Amy Adams as Vicki Boyd.

And Lindsay Lohan would be a shoe-in for bad girl Brenda Carnegie!

Sam was modeled after Robert DeNiro so there is no one else who could come close. :)

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

Dylan Maguire returns to Ireland with Vicki Boyd to find and rescue a missing CIA operative, and while there he must confront a past he thought he'd left behind forever.

Will your book be self-published or be represented by an agency?

Drake Valley Press, who published the previous books in the Black Swamp Mysteries series, is scheduled to release the book in the spring of 2013.

How long did it take for you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

About three months. I was under contract to write three books in 2012 so there was no time to waste!

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

I really can't think of any with a similar plot though there are some great ones that take place in Ireland.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

I wanted to write a book set in Ireland and I wanted to show the readers the past that Dylan Maguire thought he'd left behind. Since he made his first appearance in Vicki's Key, there have been bits and pieces of his life before he came to America - but this book will pull it all together. Readers will see a part of him they've never seen before.

What else about your book might pique the readers interest?

If you like ghost stories and stories set in the moors of England, you'll enjoy Dylan's Song. It also has international intrigue, suspense and adventure so it would be of interest to those who enjoy reading about the CIA and their missions. It also sets up the next book in the series, which deals with American politics.

Now to pass on the torch so others can tell of their Work In Progress:

Tuesday Teaser

It's time for the Tuesday Teaser! This week, I've selected a passage from my latest release, Secrets of a Dangerous Woman.

To set the scene: Dylan Maguire, in his first assignment with the CIA, interrogated recently captured Brenda Carnegie. But when she escaped again, his assignment changed to finding her and bringing her back in. At the same time, Vicki Boyd has been looking for the sister she was separated from after their parents' airplane accident - Brenda Ann Boyd.

Imagine Dylan's surprise when this happens:

“Vicki!” Dylan said as Vicki grabbed him from behind and gave him a bear hug. “Where ‘ave you been all afternoon? I’ve been quite concerned.”

He started to turn around, but she held him in place.

“What are you doin’ to me, Darlin’?”

“I have a surprise,” Vicki said.

“You found your sister?”

“Yes. And she’s here.”

“Well, let me go, Woman,” he laughed, “so’s I can meet ‘er.”

She dropped her arms from around him. As he turned around, she stood between him and her sister but over her head, he caught the crown of a cowboy hat beside the back door.

As she stepped to the side, a wide grin on her face, he studied the figure beside the back door. Her eyes were obscured by the hat’s long, curved bill. But as he peered at her chin and her jawline, a feeling began in the pit of his stomach and worked upwards, freezing the words on his lips that he’d expected to say.

The woman stepped forward and with a jaunty sweep of the cowboy hat, removed it from her head, allowing masses of wavy copper hair to spill across her shoulders. It reached almost to her waist and was so voluminous that he wondered how she’d managed to fit it all beneath the hat.

As she stepped forward, his eyes went to the butterfly bandage on her forehead. A slow, sly smile swept across her face and as she neared him, he found himself staring into the same amber eyes shared by her sister.

She placed her hand around his neck and rose onto her toes to kiss him lightly on the cheek, her lips lingering along his cheekbone. “So you’re Dylan Maguire,” she said in a confident, husky voice, “and she’s ‘Bennie’ and Vicki’s ‘Woman.’ I just can’t wait to hear what sweet little pet name you dream up for me.”

Dylan’s eyes met hers as he slowly reached for her hand and removed it from his neck. “Vicki, Darlin’,” he said, “may I have a word with you, Dear?”

“Sure,” Vicki said. She remained facing him with a wide grin on her face.

“In private?” he added.

Secrets of a Dangerous Woman

My 14th book was released earlier this month and I'm really happy to say it has come out of the starting gate at a gallop. For the first time ever, the eBook was released a month before the printed edition. The excitement has been building and in a few weeks, I will embark on an around-the-world blog tour - 21 stops in 21 days.

Secrets of a Dangerous Woman is part of the Black Swamp Mysteries series. It is set in Lumberton, North Carolina, where the black water of the Lumber River snakes through town. It's the perfect place to hide a body.

The town is a step back to yesteryear with its wide historic streets, trees overhanging to meet in the middle of the street like two ancient friends shaking hands...

And it's the site where a group of operatives gather, ready for their next CIA mission.

Vicki Boyd is a psychic spy who can travel to any longitude and latitude and report back to our government on exactly who and what is there;

Dylan Maguire is an undercover operative on his first CIA mission in Secrets of a Dangerous Woman;

Brenda Carnegie is a computer hacker who prefers to live on the wrong side of the law; and it's her illegal exploits that have her in Dylan's crosshairs as he undergoes his first mission: to interrogate her.

Christopher Sandige is a political strategist who is infatuated with the beautiful and mysterious Brenda but who may find he could risk too much to find her and keep her safe;

And when Brenda escapes from Dylan's custody, it's obvious that she had help from within the CIA's own ranks. With Vicki Boyd's help, Dylan finds her again. But now his mission has changed. Now he must discover why some in the highest government offices want her killed -- and others will risk everything to help her.

And when he discovers her true identity, his mission has just become very personal.

Buy it today at amazon: Kindle or in printed form. Also available at all fine book stores and for iPad, Nook and other eReaders!

Lil Gracie Lou

What do you want to know about an author but are afraid to ask?

That's one of the questions I faced in a unique interview with Lil Gracie Lou. A lot of fans have told me they'd love to know more about my private life - and whether my own experiences find their way into my books.

One thing you might not know about me is I adore freshwater angelfish. And yes, that is exactly how I arrived at Vicki's Boyd's "cover" as an angelfish breeder when she's really a CIA spy. Below is a video I took of 11 baby angels barely the size of a nickel when I moved them from their hospital tank (maternity ward) to their very own "digs". They will each grow to be from 8 inches tall to 10 inches tall.

Find out more personal facts about me by visiting Lil Gracie Lou today and asking me your questions!
